A quick, rather page turning read. Nothing too memorable or too shocking but enjoyable.

I absolutely flew through the first half of this book. When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about how I could be reading it. It was a solid book from the beginning. I loved the mystery element coupled with the family dynamic because it made the story multi-layered. Then I kind of hit a bump. Some of the events required me to suspend belief because they seemed a little too far fetched. The mystery seemed so easy and I kind of checked out. I had felt the book went from a 5 star to a 3 star at that point. And then...let's just say - keep reading! The characters were human and easy to relate with. And I loved the book because it gave me a satisfying ending without everything tied up all neat and perfect. I ended up giving the book a solid 4 stars and will look for more works by Rebecca Drake in the near future!

I think I went into this book with my expectations just a little too high. I'd heard nothing but great things and it fell a bit flat for me. The book is split into two parts and the first part took me a week to get through - I found it really slow. I read the second half in one night because I just wanted to get through it. I had figured most of it out by then, but there was one twist I didn't see coming. The second half saved this book from getting a lower rating from me, but overall I just wasn't impressed. I seem to be in the minority with that opinion, though, so if you like thrillers I'd check it out.

Thank you Netgalley for my digital copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This novel ratcheted my anxiety sky high, as I believe it was intended to. As a mother of littles, it was hard reading about a child being taken, not once, but twice in a 3 month period. This was not a pleasant read, but it was intriguing and the story grasped my attention throughout. There was no fluff here; just straight up tension and psychological thrills.

Sophia disappears at the park and after a group search and about 45 minutes, she returns appearing to be unharmed aside from a small spot on her skin that her mother, Jill, believes to be a pin prick from a needle, not a bug bite as the paramedics suggest. Life appears to go on as normal until 3 months later Sophia is taken from her bedroom, which threatens to not only end David and Jill's marriage, but puts Jill in suspicion of committing the crime. Jill decides to do whatever it takes to get her daughter back, no matter the cost.

Again, this read was intense and disturbing but gripping and fascinating. The story wasn't overly predictable but it wasn't uniquely memorable either. I think the only thing keeping this from a 5* read for me was that I didn't particularly like any of the characters. Everyone seemed selfish and a bit obnoxious which was slightly distracting from the story and prohibited me from really diving in fully. A great read that was fairly short at around 300 pages; I'd still recommend and am interested in checking out some of the author's other novels.

Unfortunately this was absolutely mediocre at best, very weak storytelling interspersed with diary entries which are more interesting than the actual story. The ending is entirely unbelievable and I know this is fiction but seriously? And the final twist added nothing to the story apart from a complete over reaction that was pointless and not needed or wanted in any way at all.

Not enough people died in this book. Seriously, I needed every character to die to be happy, but instead it was only every second character. Darn.

Also, the puncture mark was entirely unnecessarily--Lyn could have drawn blood later--so the whole section that made the premise stand out here wasn't even exciting. I'm so disappointed.

But this was a fine read. Engrossing.
