– They'd looked forward to post-war life for so long, only to find that nothing could be returned to the way it was before. –

– Louisa loved her mother but sometimes she resembled nothing more than one of the pillowcases she so faithfully washed and pressed: clean, – white, smelling of Lux flakes and existing only to provide comfort for others. –

– Perhaps we shan't ever marry and we'll be the "surplus women" they're always worrying about in the newspapers. We shall wear thick worsted stockings and glasses, and grow our own vegetables. We could read books all day long and never dress for dinner. –

– Having the physical strength to fight back didn't always mean you could. Fear or shame held hands down tighter than any rope. –

This is the 3rd Mitford mystery, based loosely of the real-life Mitford family, which allows the author to name drop real historical characters, such as Winston Churchill, Virginia Woolf and Evelyn Waugh. Fellowes has created a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the young and wealthy, even during a time when the world is turning sour (1929-1932). Guy Sullivan and Louisa Cannon link up again, off and on, over a period of three years to finally solve four murders that no one thought were murders. Dragging out the story over three years with nothing happening until almost the last chapter detracted from my interest in this book.

I was rather confused by this book. I'm really interested in the Mitford sisters and have read extensively around the subject, so this appealed to me. I'm not really sure what this was meant to be however. It is kind of a murder mystery and kind of a history, but more of a history than a murder mystery and certainly any tension in the plot was well and truly lost where great periods of time elapse where nothing is being investigated and pages are filled with what is essentially a re-telling of the Mitford's lives. Not for me.
