So much sadness in just one book. But 4 stars because it was a bit boring compared to other books in the series.

After returning home from Greece, Tom, Alice and the Spook find that the county has been under attack from enemy soldiers. The Spooks house has been burned along with his priceless library. Bony Lizzy has been released from her pit in the garden, and the Boggard that had been protecting the house and grounds is gone.

To escape the soldiers, the 3 take passage to Mona in hopes of finding a place to rest and regroup. However Mona is far from peaceful and they soon discover that there is dark magic underfoot. A shaman has put himself in power and is controlling an underground power. When they are taken captive they find themselves against an old enemy that has found a way to tap into a cache of power to use not only against them but also against the people on Mona.

It's a good thing these are a quick read, or I would have stopped bothering to read them awhile ago. There's an astonishing sameness about them all, no matter what the variety of monsters, witches, devils, etc.

So far this has been my least favorite of the series. "Rise of the Huntress" doesn't seem as scary or have as much action as the original books in the series. It was almost...boring. I am also confused with the changes that have been going on with Tom. In this book and the one before it, Tom seems to be breaking his master's rules and crossing lines. I can't tell if everything is going to blow up in his face and he'll learn a valuable lesson about compromising his principles, OR if he'll teach his master that everything is not black and white. It's very confusing.
I give this book two and a half stars.

I was going to give it a 4 because, well, it's part of a young adult horror series and I felt silly giving it a 5. But this series is SO well written, with really great and interesting characters and a non-stop plot; I stayed up late to finish it and didn't want it to end. So, really, that's the hallmark of a 5 for me.

Tom, Alice, and the Spook escape the County as it is invaded. They land on the island Mona, whose residents don't take kindly to strangers. The guard uses an abhuman to find witches. Tom and Alice are accused of being witches and tested to see if they are indeed so. They are imprisoned only to find out that another witch has also been captured: Boney Lizzie and she is even more powerful than ever.
