After returning home from Greece, Tom, Alice and the Spook find that the county has been under attack from enemy soldiers. The Spooks house has been burned along with his priceless library. Bony Lizzy has been released from her pit in the garden, and the Boggard that had been protecting the house and grounds is gone.
To escape the soldiers, the 3 take passage to Mona in hopes of finding a place to rest and regroup. However Mona is far from peaceful and they soon discover that there is dark magic underfoot. A shaman has put himself in power and is controlling an underground power. When they are taken captive they find themselves against an old enemy that has found a way to tap into a cache of power to use not only against them but also against the people on Mona.
