Really enjoyed the writing and the intricate web of characters and plot, but some of the plot points and characters fell flat for me because of their predictability and stereotypical behavior.

DNF at about the quarter mark. The writing was engaging and the intrigue was intriguing but it starts sad and the grief and how each layer of the mystery just keeps contributing to that grief and the way everyone just sucked really dragged everything down. While I want to know what happened and the reading was very consumable, I'm not enjoying the emotional experience enough to continue. And I could definitely have done without the meta commentary on literary-ness and how writers need bad and sad things to happen to them to write best.

While it is a bit long, the sections about a Spanish noble family were interesting an made it above average.

Librazo!!

While beautifully written, this novel leaned more towards dysfunctional family drama or a historical setting with emotional exploration rather than the suspense I was anticipating. The mystery element didn't fully emerge until around 70%, and the focus remained on character psychology rather than building suspense. Despite the detailed prose, the slow pacing and emphasis on emotional unraveling didn't quite capture my usual preference for mystery thrillers.

The clunky translation slowed me down in the beginning, but I finished the last half of the book in the last couple of days. A very layered, nuanced mystery with a conclusion I absolutely did not see coming.
