Like most elder millennials, my first exposure to anime was through Cartoon Network's Toonami. And as much as I enjoyed superheroes as a kid, I was always bummed that female heroes were usually the minority on a team. (X-Men was a rare exception.)
So imagine my joy to discover a show where an ENTIRE crew of heroes was brimming with girl power. Plus, the mix of action, romance, slice of life and friendship just checked so many boxes for me. Needless to say, Sailor Moon was my gateway to so many interests (JRPGs, graphic novels/manga, other anime, etc.), so the Pretty Guardians will always hold a special place in my heart.
Flash forward many years later to when my Libby app notified me that the Eternal Collection was now available...well, let's just say I've never checked out 10 books so quickly.
In terms of this volume, I had so much fun reuniting with this world! I really liked the translation notes, too: it's so interesting to understand why certain words were chosen and gain insight into Japanese culture.
There isn't much more to say that hasn't already been said, so I'll refrain from gushing much more. But while this setting is very much of its era, the story itself is timeless. One might even say...Eternal. 🌙
As a sidenote, I read the original translation of Acts 1-5 years ago and totally forgot my girl Rei straight up incinerated a dude while wearing her trademark chic high heels. What a badass.

Usagi Tsukino is just your regular teenage girl - she's not particularly good at school or sports, she loves naps and lunch time, she's a bit of a crybaby, and she'd rather spend her afternoons hanging out at the arcade and daydreaming. Her carefree life is turned upside down when she rescues a talking cat who tells her that it's her destiny to lead the Sailor Guardians, protectors of the Moon Princess and the Silver Crystal, and champions of love and justice. Usagi will fight evil by moonlight and win love by daylight as she seeks out the other Sailor Guardians and learns that the strength to stand up for her friends and what is right is more important than getting a 95 in English class.
Why yes, I am an elder millennial who grew up watching Sailor Moon on Toonami, how did you know? There was no way I was going to embark on an adult manga journey without getting back to my roots and the anime that started it all - and it's all the nicer with these special edition manga, which are HUGE and have a lot of nice high-resolution and color illustrations. While I wouldn't say that Sailor Moon has the depth and breadth of some of the manga/anime I have watched as an adult, the nostalgia factor (the art style of 90s anime really scratches an itch in my brain), the quintessential magical girl adventure centering around true love, friendship, banishing evil, and still finding time to be late to school holds a special place in my heart, and I feel is reflected in a lot of the tropes that I now look for in their adult reading (and I have a feeling I'm not the only one riding the magical girl anime to romantasy pipeline). Usagi (or Serena, depending on what adaptation you watched), they could never make me hate you - it's your party, cry if you want to.
