Received via Netgalley in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

I may have gotten a little too into reading this one to the nephew.

This is an absolutely freaking adorable story about a Little Red hen who loves being read to. And her human, Henry, comes every day to the chicken coop to read her and the other chickens stories. And it's her favorite part of the day.

Until one day, Henry shows up with a flat square that doesn't do much other than make noise and keeps Henry completely distracted and - most importantly - not reading, Little Red has to come up with a plan to get Henry back to reading.

Little Red gets more frantic the further we go, and by the end, Jeremiah all but put his hand on my mouth to get me to settle down.

Also, quite appropriately, he told me he preferred physical books, as opposed to ones on his tablet.

I think this one knocked it out of the park on both those fronts.

The Chicken Who Loved Books is a children's picture book, which shows a young boy who stops reading his books to the chickens as he becomes distracted by his new electronic device.

The illustrations in this book were so adorable, especially the chickens (however, I may be a tad biased as they are my favourite animal) and they aided the storyline. It also uses humour in a captivating way. This book portrays a great message to younger children to try to encourage them to read more and to teach them manners (don't ignore people, try to include people in your fun, rather than being selfish).

I would recommend this to children aged 4+.

Cute story about being in the moment, which in this case is reading books to chickens, because of course that is something that a lot of kids do.

The chickens, in this story, love being read to, and miss it when the boy decides to play a pocket video game instead.

I know my chickens like to be talked to, so this isn't so far fetched a story, and they do not like it when you ignore them when they are trying to get your attention, and they will try to get your attention. One of my roosters will grab my skirt if he thinks he is being ignored.

So, overall, a cute story about being engaged at the moment, and not living life with ones face in front of a screen.

A friend who kept chickens once told me that she read to her chickens almost daily. She said they gathered round her and seemed calm and engaged with her. She said they really seemed to enjoy this special time . Now Angela Hunt has captured this idea into an engaging story of a young boy and his chickens. Henry reads to his chickens but then stops reading and becomes engrossed in a computer game ignoring his flock of friends. Little Red waits patiently for Henry to go back to his books but finally takes matters into his own wings !!! The value of reading and animal friends is clear here.

This book is a winner! The illustrations are fantastic, and the moral is bang on. Henry is a little boy who reads stories to his chicken friends each day after school. But he gets a video game and stops reading to play games. He ignores the chickens, and one of them is mighty upset. Finally, the chickens get his attention and show that they want to read books.
Kiddos with noses in their phones rather than books should give this a read. Even chickens love books, so why not humans? The illustrations are so colorful and bright that I’m sure kids will love this one as a picture book.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Hunt Haven Press and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Little Red loved listening to Henry reading his books, but one day, he brought an electronic game with him instead, and stopped reading to them. What's a book-loving chicken to do?

Charmingly illustrated, The Chicken who Loved Books is a reminder that books bring people together more than flashy noisy games. We could look deeper and discuss digital additction (which is a very real thing, even in children), and how reading with someone can help bring people back. It's a reminder to parents to put away their phones and read to their kids when asked; it's a reminder to children to pry their eyes away from screens.

Perhaps a little heavy-handed, though. While the determined chook was amusing, the rest of the book fell a little flat for my book-loving kids' tastes.
