I read this after finishing the movie and I was super disappointed.. basically nothing really happens ? It was really repetitive (at every chapter the same thing was said.. but I guess because it was published in a magazine or something) but it was my first Lovecraft short story and I won't stop here! It allowed me to discover his writing style, which yes, is really wordy, but I personally really enjoyed it and was surprised to understand everything haha

Each chapter was the exact same but with a different exposition and alternating background elements i.e. the circumstances and minor events etc. Herbert West is an interesting character but what the movie does best is explore his character and personality in a broader way. The movie also seemed to effectively adapt the anthological short stories into one whole narrative which suits it better.

Started out good, became distractingly racist, took a surprising turn and ended gruesomely

(5 star) incredible!! Grotesque without overdoing it. Twisted without being repulsive. Loved this and the eerie, twisted imaginings that have since followed.

Unfortunately the monthly publication format got to me. I have this thing about books being repetitive. Let's call it the Babysitters Club Effect. From someone who read gobs and gobs of those, I can tell you from experience that the first chapter is always the same introduction of characters and pertinent events leading to them becoming babysitters. Like I said, I read gobs and gobs of them. As a result, I am now near nauseated when a book starts repeating itself. I do understand why you would have to refresh people's memories a month after they read the last chapter as they would have in 1922. I get it, which makes it unfortunate that it still bugged me so much.
This was my first Lovecraft so if any of you know of anything by him that's NOT in monthly publication style, I'd be more than happy to try it. I did love his British Masterpiece Theater style voice in my head as I read. I just lost my connection with it when I noticed the repeat.
