To the public, Jade’s a popular social media influencer. At home, she’s the loving fiancé to wealthy architect Greg and a joyous expectant mother. But Jade’s harboring secrets from her past, ones that she fears would change the way her fiancé sees her and damage their relationship. When a brutal home invasion causes Jade to miscarry and leaves Greg with a traumatic brain injury, both are determined to protect themselves and find out who is responsible. While the attack forces Jade to revisit her past to look for the perpetrators, Greg turns hi-tech, installing security cameras all over their home to prevent another attack from intruders — or maybe even from the woman he loves.

Take your anxiety meds before reading this one! Brimming with betrayal, suspicion, and doubt, “Her Three Lives” might be Cate Holahan’s best yet. An highly addictive page turner, it explores the fragility of trust and how well we truly know those we love. Jade has secrets, but they’re meant to protect her life with Greg, not harm it . However, her odd behavior after the attack makes Greg wonder what she’s hiding and if she’s the one who intends him harm. A shred of doubt turns into a mountain of mistrust when his grown daughter’s suspicions confirm and compound his own. Greg has blind spots when it comes to the people he cares for the most, choosing to see only what he wants. It’s Jade’s secrets and Greg’s blind spots that ultimately create the conflict in the story (as well as the anxiety) and make it so compelling.

It’s often said that the greatness of a story is in the telling. That couldn’t be more true with this book. “Her Three Lives” is fraught with multiple layers of tension that only intensify as the novel progresses. There’s tension within Jade as she tries to hide her secrets and protect Greg from them at the same time. There’s also tension between the characters, and tension in some of the scenes as you bite your nails, anxious to find out what happens next. Tension fills the overall story too. Both Greg and Jade feel watched — and not just from the cameras. You can’t help but hold your breath at times when you read, expecting the attackers to jump out from the shadows to finish the job they started. It creates a sense of urgency as you read.

Not as fast paced as it is intense and intriguing. Not as twisty as it is highly suspenseful from scene to scene, chapter to chapter, and beginning to end. “Her Three Lives” is an exciting read that grabbed me by my attention span from the very first page. I love well written domestic suspense novels, but I find a lot of them cliched. Not “Her Three Lives”. It checked off all my boxes and did the one thing I love for a book to do: kept me reading way past my bedtime because I couldn’t put it down.

Thanks to Grand Central Publishing and Cate Holahan for the gifted ARC.

Jade Thompson is a blogger and social media influencer, who discussing Caribbean foods and trends. She is engaged to Greg, a NY architect. When a home invasion leaves Greg severely injured, and Jade suffering a miscarriage, their once perfect life begins to unravel.
Jade receives threatening notes, but doesn't want to tell Greg, so she lies through omission. Greg begins to suspect that Jade is a golddigger, fueled by stories told him by his daughter, Violet.
As their distrust of each other threatens their relationship, the truth finally comes out - to devastating consequences.
This book was just OK. I understand that a traumatic brain injury could cause issues - but Greg's reaction to Jade became a bit out of control, in my opinion.

This book started out with a big bang. It definitely got my attention. From there I was hooked and could not stop reading. While, I still read this at a very fast pace, I found the overall vibe of the story kind of predictable. Yet, this book is still a good read. One that I don't regret reading.

Can we speak about all the players in the story. You have Jade, Greg, his family, and the detectives. I had mixed feelings when it came to Jade and Greg. The rest of the characters I did not much care for. Greg's family was really bitter towards Jade thus making me off put by their sour attitudes. In regards, to the detectives, they seemed to not be very prominent in the story. More like third level characters. I was not a fan of Jade in the beginning but as I got to learn more about her, I slowly moved to her side. Greg was the opposite. I was for him in the beginning but not in the end.

Jade Thompson is a prominent social media influencer. Her fiancé is Greg Hamlin, who like Jade, is very successful in his career as an architect. Together, Jade and Greg are the envy of their peers. Especially since Greg managed to court a woman 20 years his junior; and Jade managed to catch the eye of a multimillionaire.

As Jade and Greg get ready for an elaborate social event, two men barge into their home and brutally attack Greg and Jade, leaving Greg with a traumatic brain injury. Investigators assigned to the crime scene speculate that there could be a number of suspects, especially since Jade had a wide net of followers on her social media platform. But as evidence is collected and interrogations conducted, closely held secrets emerge leading Greg and Jade to question and suspect each other’s roles in the vicious attack. Was the attack a random home invasion, or was it planned?

Her Three Lives is a slow-moving novel. Even though the characters are straightforward and the plot linear, the novel just took a long time to get interesting. There are, however, enough “breadcrumbs” to keep the reader engaged until the finish.

Not the best psychological suspense, but good enough for three appreciative stars.

I received a physical copy of the book from Grand Central Publishing. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.

I can't decide whether I liked this one or not..going more with not so much. I think the plot was predictable, too many holes in the story and the ending was far too rushed and random. There could have been more character development too! 2.5 ⭐

This book is complex with a lot going on. It is well worth the read to find out who was after Jade, Greg, and their family. A main part of the story is mistrust and conspiracy theories. If you don’t trust the ones you love, who can you trust. This is an issue when people you love are telling you opposite theories. I’m glad I found this book and has the chance to read it.

Her Three Lives by Cate Holahan is a page-turning domestic mystery.

Thirty-two-year-old Jade Thompson is an influential life style blogger who writes about her Caribbean American culture. Following a bit of a whirlwind romance with two decades older Greg Hamlin, she is now engaged and expecting their first child. Greg is a wealthy, successful architect who is still in midst of a contentious divorce. His two adult children, twenty-three-year-old Violet and younger son Paul are not exactly thrilled with his new relationship. Despite his children’s attitudes, Greg and Jade are blissfully happy and eagerly preparing for their future together. However, their lives are shattered when Greg suffers a serious head injury and Jade miscarries during a home invasion. After he is released from the hospital, their relationship deteriorates as Greg grows suspicious that Jade might have something to with the attack. Jade is keeping secrets from her fiancé but are they related to the vicious assault?

Jade is devoted to assisting Greg during his recovery and she is also mourning the loss of their baby. She is already under stress since their attackers have not been caught when Greg decides to install a security system. Jade sometimes does not recognize the suspicious man she is now living with. After she begins receiving threatening notes in the mail, she is afraid they are connected to her past. Unable to reveal the information she has kept hidden from Greg, Jade tries to find out for sure. Will she unearth the truth about who attacked them and why?

Greg is dealing with side effects as he recovers from his head wound. Unfortunately, he fears losing Jade if he reveals any weaknesses. So, he works hard to keep up a façade of strength when he is around her. Greg also ignores his doctor’s admonition to work with a counselor to deal with his PTSD. With his paranoia and fear of being attacked again rising, he installs a plethora of security cameras both inside and outside of their home. His daughter Violet stokes his fears about Jade and he grows increasingly distrustful of his fiancée. As his temper rises, what will Greg do about his suspicions about Jade?

Her Three Lives is a suspense-laden domestic mystery. Jade is a vibrantly-developed character who is proud of her heritage and shaped by her life experiences. Greg’s wealth insulates him ordinary life which contributes to his unwarranted but very real fears after the brutal assault.  The storyline is fast-paced and the tension increases with every chapter. With clever misdirects, Cate Holahan brings this riveting mystery to an unpredictable dénouement. I absolutely loved and highly recommend this thrilling domestic mystery to fans of the genre.

3.2 Rating.

Honestly, words can not describe how irriated I was about this book and these characters. By the end I wanted to throw my book across the room...I didn't because I was sitting in front of a window, but the sentiment was there.

These characters are insufferable at the best of times and just plain dumb at the worst. They make bad decisions, they don't communicate and they act like they are in a bad lifetime movie. I would not be surprised if it does become a lifetime movie.

Jade didn't know how to communicate, Greg didn't know how to communicate and they both were so insecure about everthing. Violet will always have a hater in me.

There truly was no redeemable characters in my opinion. At about the halfway point I was just ready for the book to be over with and call it done. I didn't care who was behind the botched robbery and I was ready to end my time with these characters.

The writing was okay, dragged alot because it seemed like the author had a quota to meet and she described everything, from the food to how they installed the cameras. Everything.

Ultimately, it was a decent read, had its okay moments and had its not so okay moments. It does hold your attention and there are some good discoveries, the twist was wild in a didn't see that coming and how anticlimatic way.
