I think the beginning of this book says best how to treat it. Take what serves you and leave what doesn’t. Every chapter is about some aspect of creating art, and they didn’t all resonate with me. But there are many that do, and after reading each of those inspiring chapters, I wanted to go make something.

If you've always been a creative person and want to tap into that side of you more, this is the book for you. Remember, creativity is a lifestyle, not a goal!

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

Will definitely come back, just didn't have the energy for this more philosophical book at the time

First, I absolutely love Rick Rubin and almost everything he’s produced. And I absolutely hate giving this a 3. But I feel like I just read, “The You You Are: A Spiritual Biography of You,” by Dr. Ricken Lazlo. This being said, much like in Severance, the quotes in this book may very well enlighten some people — especially those who consider themselves noncreatives. In fact, I know some people I might even buy the book for. But I wish the book was derived more from the breadth of incredible interviews that Rick has been a part of, rather than his attempt to “remove everything from the content until nothing more could be removed.”

Some decent ideas, with a lot of fluff and some nonsense.

Honestly, I found this book dull and uninspiring. Just vague ramblings about art. Very few actionable takeaways as an artist. Maybe it just wasn’t for me. I hope it helped someone, because I found it unworthy of my time.

3.5 stars.
I love Rick Rubin as an audio person myself, and in general I think he's p cool, but I think I like his work/influence the best because I've known that he's a 'guru'-esque personality now and that's fine, but I should've remembered that before spending 32 bucks on the hardback. If I had known this was gonna be mainly common sense instagram quote pages mixed in with nuggets of wisdom that are delivered in a guru way, I would've bought a paperback if possible.
The book is good and he is a wise dude, and I'd recommend any artist (current or desiring) to give a read at least once. I found a lot that resonated with me, but I could do without the instagram quote format for "revelations" or "affirmations."
so great, but not the best it could be for me. Will be coming back for nuggets I found helpful, just wish I had bought a cheaper format..
