engaging, with a wonderful depth of character for both the heroine and the city of New Orleans. an impulse buy I do not regret.

2.5 stars - This book was extremely unfocused and had little or no plot. While informative, the tangents that the author would go off on were frustrating and seemed like filler to reach a page limit. That being said, this book is a great travelogue for New Orleans; you could probably take this with you if you were visiting there and be able to find great places to eat and sites to see based on the info in this book. There was a clever twist at the end and there were very brief moments of brilliant writing which made me give this the extra 1/2 star, other than that it was disappointing.

Nola Cespedes may finally get her break when her boss at the Times-Picayune assigns her a feature story. When Nola hears the actual assignment, though, she's more than a little apprehensive. After Katrina, a number of sex offenders vanished off the map. The paper wants a piece covering locals thoughts and perspectives on the issue as well as that of convicted sex offenders as well. While Nola would rather do just about anything than interview possibly violent pervs, she knows it's her best shot and making a name for herself and leaving New Orleans behind. Almost simultaneously, news of a kidnapping is making its way through the Crescent City. Connections are made to two recent murders and Nola suspects that it could make a great parallel to her own story.

Castro's plot is really smart but much too complicated to easily sum up. Nola is a pretty intriguing character and Castro weaves a pretty fantastic and captivating story. Not only that, but she's done an amazing job of capturing the heart of New Orleans, accurately detailing the city in a way that many authors are unable to.

Fantastic book, amazing plot, and details, and yeah, just really good! Loved it! Kinda hoping for a sequel, but kinda not, because it left off in a place of healing, so yeah, great ending!

I simply loved this book. Now THIS is what you can call "literary fiction"! Full review to follow...

I was waiting for the climax and man oh man I didn't see that coming. I had to continue the story to see what happens. Nola was a real person and her character made the story come to life for me. She had flaws and many layers. I got emotionally attached to her. Can't wait for the next book.

The story was compelling, although a lot of the book seemed like 'asides' about other things going on in the world of the protagonist. But the insight into post-Katrina New Orleans was moving. For me, the most interesting random fact was that after the storm, workers went to damaged houses and spray-painted an X with a number to indicate the number of dead in the house, and that during the rebuild some ppl who repainted purposefully left the X and number visible as a tribute. I wouldn't say the writing deserved 4 stars but the sex-offender and Katrina content bumped it up for me.

The second of our trip home audiobooks. This story gave an interesting flavor of NOLA - one of our favorite places, complete with little historical lagniappes, all superimposed on a story about sexual abuse and child molestation. Sounds like a horrible mix, but it was well written and eased us along the story at just the right pace.
