Just thinking about the title gives me nostalgia whiplash
One of my favorite books when I was a kid. I really enjoyed this re-read
I'm a sucker for this type of book, so it's not a surprise that I loved it. I was surprised, though, that my kids LOVED it. We were listening at the same time to Arabian Nights and they were uninterested in all the violence and intrigue, and kept asking for this book instead: they were fascinated about this young kid's life during the depression. BTW, it's read by the guy who played the dad from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and he's really good.
This book is so good! Bud's voice is immediately engaging and drew me right in. Bud, Not Buddy is humorous and poignant.
It was interesting to read this now that I have read The Mighty Miss Malone. It was great to see Deza again. I loved this historical fiction even on a re-read. It has just the right combination of humor and difficulties - neither overwhelming.
It was a good book, but i wasn't all that enthusiastic in the beginning. I warmed up to it after the middle and it has a interesting ending as well.
Bud lives in the Home. One morning, he is taken to live with another family, the Amoses. Their son starts beating on him and the parents believe Bud did it. They lock him in their shed. Bud gets out and tries to find his father from clues his mother left him when she died. Bud tries to walk to Grand Rapids, MI, from Flint. A nice man gives hims a ride and even knows Bud's father. Herman E. Calloway plays in a band and doesn't believe Bud could be his son. Bud becomes part of their band, making friends. They all learn Bud is Mr. Calloway's grandson.
This book was okay. I don’t really have a ton to say about it. I think Bud’s character voice was well established. But honestly it was just pretty boring. Slow plot, nice ending but nothing from left field that’s for sure.

Good book about a 10 year old kid living in the depression and surviving in the foster care system. Bud carries around a suitcase full of his late mothers things (flyers for a band, pictures, wocks) all the time to stay close to her. He has a lot of bad experiences with the Home. One day bud decides he is going to find his father. He takes a journey to the next city over. He gets a ride from Lefty Lewis (love him) and finally meets the band from the flyer. He has a great time with them and they are very welcoming. Later they find out the person on the flyers is actually his grandfather. They take him in and raise him.
Good book. Very sweet! Funny too!
