A+ on the debate vibes, would have loved to see a more transformational interpretation of Pride and Prejudice ala Emma and Clueless but very much recommend for younger teens who are nerdy and love Jane Austen. My teenage self LOVES this.

Fun, light hearted and easy to read. I liked the way she updated the classic with many of the same story elements of the original, but converted them to high school debate.

i am not in the intended audience for this book and it wasnt that good but i did read it. and enjoyed it a lot (mostly because i was in shock or flabbergasted or laughing). and i honestly think if i was 14-17 years old and didnt know anything about social structures and racial dynamics this book would make me realize a lot of things about the world!

highlight: darcy explaining that he hates hamilton because its slavery apologism and that people of color should write their own stories. and he was real for that

Loved the reworkings of the characters' relationships (embarrassing family => embarrassing speech & debate team, Jay/Bingley, Colin/Tomi) and the transfer to a high school setting. Loved Lidia's agency and the exploration of harassment/predation rather than just having it be a (sexist) plot device. Loved how the characters discussed important issues through their debates - and the discussion about how Bose Electronics is not German but American founded by a Bengali. Loved the Desi rep.

The book would have benefited from a good editor. Many of the insertions of Pride and Prejudice quotes verbatim didn't entirely fit, and some of the private v. public school dynamic seemed a bit heavy-handed at times though often, economic privilege was called out in an organic way (such as, affording to have multiple inhalers everywhere). While I liked Jay's characteristic changes from P&P, the reason why Bingley ghosted him was hard to understand. The wolf analogy was also a little hard to understand, though it did seem on par with a high school junior's work. In addition, some of the other dialog was weird, such as when Jishnu says, "It's my school, I can do whatever I want! Now come here, and let me do whatever I want!"

Definitely a fun read with good rep. Nothing really racy.
SpoilerLidia is observed in a room alone with Jishnu (Wickham), who is nearly entirely undressed though she is not. She is rumored to have had sex with him, though that is not the case.

Really loved the Bengali-Indian-Pakistani take on pride and prejudice! The characters, the class conflicts, the whole setting of the 21st century, the feminist takes, experiences of kids of immigrants- loved them.
The female lead read a bit too self-indulgent some times though.

I have a confession. I've never read Pride and Prejudice. I just couldn't get into it. I didn't like the movie and I've always DNFed the book. In fact, I've had difficulty with all of Austen's works. Which is weird because I've almost always enjoyed retellings of the stories.

Like this one! I loved this book. It was delightful, witty, and full of female empowerment and just general awesomeness! Like this exchange:

Jishnu laughed, offering me a coffee mug. “You’re not like most girls, are you?”

“Ehhhhh.” I made a “wrong answer” buzzer sound even as I accepted the mug from him and went about selecting some black tea. “Don’t do that thing.”

“What thing?” Jishnu looked surprised as he poured the hot water into my mug for me.

I nodded my thanks. “That thing where you put down other girls to compliment me. It’s so old-school old boys.”

I love it so much! Although, I shouldn't be surprised because I've loved everything that I've read from Dr. Sayantani DasGupta so far! Her writing style is fun and badass!

And this book makes me want to retry the original because of how good it is!! But maybe I'll try it as an audiobook this go round.
