Pretty good book. The characters are a little different from their television counterparts...but not enough that it harms the book. I liked the premise, the conflict was a little contrived--but it was still a lot of fun with characters I love.

At first, it is a not awful read. The plot moves along, the characters are a little too neurotic and not quite right, but in general it is okay. Then, the conflict arises. It is the most pathetic, contrived, unbelievably stupid conflict ever. At that point, I stopped reading. I know that there are amazing Star Trek books out there, but this is not one of them. I'm a little disappointed that I didn't get to read the ending, but I don't think I could stomach any more of the contrived conflict.

I don't usually expect much from novels continuing/accompanying a tv series. But still I often can't resist and usually it's nice entertainment for in-between "heavier" reading.

This book was entertaining and thought-provoking at the same time. It raises the question of what defines life as such and whether euthanasia is the right choice or not.

Highly recommended for Star Trek fans.

It is fascinating as an artifact, not just of 1987, but of writing about the series from the writer's bible before it debuted, and not from what actually would happen on the show. There are many things in here which would be off-putting if one did not know the backstory of the creation of this novel. It would be very easy to make the minor edits to the story to bring it in line with canonical notions and still be a very solid story. Once again, Carey shows he love of sailing and the sea in how she frames the narrative of the story.
