NOW WE ARE BACK ON TRACK BABY! cause whew has this series taken me on a goose chase. some may call it too long. some may say it should have stopped after book 2. some may say books 3 and 4 were like pulling teeth. and to those people, I turn to my theatre training and I say YES ANDDDDD if not for the rain (books 3 and 4) we wouldn't be able to appreciate this FUCKING RAINBOW (book 5). this is the core elements of the series at its best. it is that which made me fall in love with the story. it is the kind of adventure mixed with love mixed with twists and turns that made me like the 2nd book so heavy. it is characters fully realized and like a PURPOSE TO WHY THEY WERE THERE and no weirdo previously nonexistent villains and just bliss all around. i LIKED THIS GOD DAMMIT. it was good. it was truly good. like as far as kids lit goes? 4.5 stars no notes baby

Caught is the fifth book in Margaret Peterson Haddix's Missing series, and it's by far the most complex and poignant volume yet. In each book, Haddix has ratcheted up the challenges and twists, but in Caught she adds in more new, surprising elements than before--with very successful results.

One of the new twists is that a "time-native" (someone from one of the past eras visited by time travelers) takes possession of an elucidator and begins re-configuring time. It makes sense that this would be Einstein--but because Haddix enjoys surprising her readers, it's not the Einstein you might expect.

The topics this story touches on are considerably more "grown-up" than in the previous books, and I felt that was mostly good. I like how Haddix portrays Mileva as a strong, intelligent self-sacrificial woman; but I question how anyone could see what Mileva sees and then live the rest of her life, even as an act of ultimate sacrifice.

The surprising revelation near the end of the book is fantastic, and I really liked how that led to a final conversation that edges toward the big questions of the universe and our life in this world. Haddix doesn't write this series as necessarily a "Christian novel," but she doesn't shy away from the presence of God in these books, and I appreciate that very much. I also love her high value on all human life, as here:
"But which people are you supposed to help?" JB asked, sounding as if he really wanted to know. . . . "What if it turns out that everyone's important? . . . Everybody that's ever lived, in all of history?" (321)
Beautiful. The Missing series continues to be impressive, especially as the complexity escalates. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

One minor complaint: I wish Haddix had chosen better titles for the books. I've read the first five volumes within the last few months, and I couldn't for the life of me tell you all the titles, in the proper order. I see how they kind of make sense, but there's not much to hold on to with each title.

Best book in the series by far which is good because the last two have been boring. I love the twists, it felt like more pieces were falling into place. Very good read, made me excited for the next.
