DID NOT FINISH: 50%

The beginning had some really insightful parts, but as it switched into the second and third gear metaphors, I really struggled to implement/keep up. This may have been, in part, due to the fact that I switched between audio/ebook, but I'm shelving the book and calling it.

I like that Dr. Brewer proposes mindfulness for breaking habit loops, which is a sustainable lifestyle shift. His proposed methods are a way to apply mindfulness in different stages, and I really appreciated how in-the-weeds he got. That being said, the last two chapters were pretty tangential.

Most helpful takeaways for me:
- Anxiety is a bad (not useful) habit, not a personality trait.
- curiosity as a transition to mindfulness
- Break habit loops instead of replacing them
- Behavioral tendencies (fight, flight, and freeze)! What are yours and how can you be aware of them / change them when they’re not beneficial

Lots of value here, just took me a long time to read through because I tend to put down nonfiction for long periods in favor of fiction

I think this should have been called "Unwinding Addiction" because it was a totally different book than I was expecting and didn't have much to do with anxiety at all, it was primarily focused on different addictions.

Overall, informative and had some good aspects.

However, the promotion of his app and Ted talks was kind of annoying.

There also wasn't much in this book on if you're anxious over things you can't control. Such as other people's views of you. There's BS about kindness beating sexism and racism. If someone is actually anxious over those directly affecting them in the moment, kindness doesn't always help much.
