Matt de la Pena is a master at writing picture books where every sentence is a work of art. This book is no different. As someone who studied piano for many years and feels music in my bones, having music personified as the narrator in this story is absolutely brilliant.
My only criticism of the book is, having never seen the movie Coco, why does music upset Mama Coco? That's never explained in this book.

My son would have requested this book every day and night if it had existed when he was lap-size. He has always loved music and art, so this book would have been right up his street.
"Sometimes the whole world can seem like a misplayed note."
"Play what's in your heart."
Matt de la Pena autographed this for me and I can't decide if I'll keep it for eventual grandkids, or give it to my teenaged son who STILL might enjoy it.

Sweet book about Coco characters. Music tells the story, and it was for the kids to find her on every page. The illustrations were lovely.

Beautiful illustrations and overall a great story but it's on the lengthy side and it takes a while to understand who is narrating.

This stunning picture book has a touching story that relates the power of music and dreams. It is gorgeous. The illustrations have details to pour over and the story has beautiful turns of phrase. It is lovely and I can't wait to share it with kids (and see the movie now in November). Bonus mentor text for personification - check the narrator!
