This was super cute, I really enjoyed Nishat’s character. I think I prefer Hani and Ishu’s guide to fake dating more than Henna Wars but this was still good too! It took me a little bit to get into (around 100 pages) but after that I was hooked.

Clunky, didactic prose with awkward exposition. (No Irish person is pausing in their inner monologue to explain what the Junior Cert is.) I'm too old for YA any more, I think.

YA + henna + sapphic romance!
Nishat’s parents aren’t okay with her being a lesbian because Muslims aren’t queer. Things get harder when an old friend walks back into her life.
A school competition for students to create their own businesses puts Nishat & Flávia against each other both with a henna business, even though Flávia is appropriating Nishat’s culture.

✨Ireland setting
Genuinely I should never wait so long to write reviews. I finished this one nearly three weeks ago & I only remember so much of it.
I loved the MC & side characters.
I loved the setting & premise of the book.
I loved learning more about culture.
I loved the queer aspect, and the dynamics of her parents’ journey with it.
Absolutely recommend this one!
Location: Ireland
Content warnings: anti-queer/bi/lesbian/Islam; racism; culture appropriation; bullying; outing; religious bigotry; hate crime; toxic friendships

Yikes. This felt like a try hard attempt at being "cool and woke" that fell so painfully flat.
