I would've DNF'd if I wasn't reading this for a read-a-thon and I didn't want to throw away the hours I spent reading. I seriously considered at about 50% when I was really uninterested in the story, but decided to stick through til the end. Unfortunately it didn't really get any better. Overall just a very boring read, with characters I couldn't really empathize with. I honestly couldn't really even call this a fantasy - barely any magic (from what I could glean it was hinted at Evi's mom) and some magical kind of creatures? I guess it was a medieval time period, but nothing much else about this book besides there being knights made it feel that way? I think this book had an interesting concept, but really wasn't executed well. I won't be continuing the series.

Also please, why do we care about a dimple THAT much? It was mentioned over and over.

Because I follow the author on TikTok and was introduced to this concept through there, I enjoyed this book more than I think anyone coming into it blind will. There isn't much characterization or worldbuilding at all, and occasionally some more modern elements slip into this obviously medieval-esque fantasy world (like rubber tubing for a fire suppression system).

It has all the tropes and everything I loved from her TokTok series, but it also had so much more. The plot was perfect. I'm devastated that I have to wait a full year for the second book.

Wow. I'm in love with Trystan and Evie and I adore the side characters. The banter was lovely and the story flowed so well. I never expected the twist that was thrown at us in the last couple of chapters. What a cliffhanger. And what an awesome thing to see Evie come into her own.
She calls herself a villain, I say that she is standing up for herself and the people she loves. If that makes her a villain, then I don't want to be a good guy.
I cannot wait for the next installment 👏🏾🔥

To start, I listened to the audio version and the narrator was lovely. The first half of this book was awesome. Loved it. The second half kind of dragged for me. Meh. I gave it 3 stars. The premise was great & the series has potential. The first half was well executed, the second half was just immature felt very YA even though it’s classified as adult science fiction and fantasy (on Amazon as of 9/21/23). It also has some weirdly harsh language that doesn’t really fit with the lighthearted tone of the story, especially in the second half when it takes a turn for a YA feel? It made me feel kind of awkward and aware instead of immersed in the story. If the second book doesn’t improve on the first, I won’t read the third.

However, this is a first time author who took a creative risk and for that I applaud her. I have high hopes that she will continue to grow as an author and the writing will become more consistent and improved in books 2 and 3!

I don’t know if I can put in words how much I sincerely loved this book. The characters are funny and Love-able. The GrumpyXSunshine relationship between The Villain and his assistant was very cute and at times made me feel like I was going to melt into a puddle.

Absolutely devoured this in one sitting! Loved the banter, plot is quick moving. Main character motivations are believable and the side characters are all unique and stand on their own within the story.
I was really impressed with the ending, especially the twists. Even if you can guess a bit of where it’s going, it unfolds beautifully. The end of the book is essentially a villain origin story for the FMC and while I was hugely surprised that this leaves on a cliffhanger (I assumed this was a standalone!) I’m excited to see where the story goes (though personally I hope it wraps up as a duet to keep the story pacing)!
