This is the second book I’ve read by Natalie Babbitt and my gosh she’s just fantastic. It’s whimsical and nostalgic and just feels like a nice hug that you’re reading. I loved the slight magical aspect to this book and how there was more than one plot going on throughout in an effortless way.

Note to myself: I read this book without any audio help.

A childhood favorite, read over skype with my best friend. Would recommend for read-alouds with kids, or for anyone who wants to read a soft and hopeful fantasy.

Gaylen is an orphan raised by the King's Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is creating a dictionary, but is stalled when he come to the word "delicious" and the King, Queen, General, and the Prime Minister himself cannot agree on what the most delicious food is. The King sends Gaylen to the four towns in the kingdom to take a poll, which creates rifts in towns and families as they argue over what food is truly delicious. Meanwhile, Gaylen hears some fantastic legends of a mermaid named Ardis who cries for her doll, wollwanders who take care of the forest, and other creatures that predate humans.

A silly premise that has more truth to it than first glance.

Upper elementary.
