The Search for Delicious by Natalie Babbitt

4.0

Gaylen is an orphan raised by the King's Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is creating a dictionary, but is stalled when he come to the word "delicious" and the King, Queen, General, and the Prime Minister himself cannot agree on what the most delicious food is. The King sends Gaylen to the four towns in the kingdom to take a poll, which creates rifts in towns and families as they argue over what food is truly delicious. Meanwhile, Gaylen hears some fantastic legends of a mermaid named Ardis who cries for her doll, wollwanders who take care of the forest, and other creatures that predate humans.

A silly premise that has more truth to it than first glance.

Upper elementary.
