Eh. This was utterly forgettable, and I have a feeling in a week I won't even remember I read it.

Unlike the previous volume this is several interlinked short stories embedded in a thousand and one nights type narrative involving the Bird character telling stories about Dancy the (anti)heroine. Always atmospheric, always interesting although sometimes a little confusing. Still a very fine dark comic fantasy that is well worth reading.

This, like volume 1, is a remarkable comic. It goes into darker places than the story in the first volume and contains three short stories instead of one long one. But the smaller stories fit together to make a sinister, heartbreaking narrative. Lieber's art is every bit as spot on in this volume as the last and I can't recommend this book as a a modern take Southern Gothic horror enough. Everything about this comic sings.

A little bit of my history regarding Alabaster.

I'm from the Netherlands. We don't have comicbook stores that carry US comics and graphic novels. I can't walk in and browse the goods and see if it might be something I would like to read. So I have to use this Belgian webstore, that imports them. Thing is, I really have to judge my GN's and comics by the cover and a really small description.

Last year the cover of Alabaster: Wolves caught my eye, and I ordered it. It was my first introduction to the works of Ms. Kiernan. Although the story was very confusing, with references to past events, I absolutely enjoyed it. The artwork was great, the dialogue very good, and I could feel the southern vibe.

I bought Pale Horse, which didn't help much in understanding Dancy. But again, I really liked it.

So, last week Grimmer Tales came in the mail. And this was again something that didn't make sense most of the time, yet I felt like it was one of the best things I ever read. I don't know what it is, but it was great.

This volume has 3 very different chapters, told by Blackbird. The last chapter was a very sad one. I didn't know what to think of it, but I actually was really moved by the ending.

Thank you Ms. Kiernan, Mr. Lieber and Ms. Rosenburg for creating both Wolves and Grimmer Tales.
