Alabaster Volume 2: Grimmer Tales by Daniel Chabon, Steve Lieber, Caitlín R. Kiernan

4.0

A little bit of my history regarding Alabaster.

I'm from the Netherlands. We don't have comicbook stores that carry US comics and graphic novels. I can't walk in and browse the goods and see if it might be something I would like to read. So I have to use this Belgian webstore, that imports them. Thing is, I really have to judge my GN's and comics by the cover and a really small description.

Last year the cover of Alabaster: Wolves caught my eye, and I ordered it. It was my first introduction to the works of Ms. Kiernan. Although the story was very confusing, with references to past events, I absolutely enjoyed it. The artwork was great, the dialogue very good, and I could feel the southern vibe.

I bought Pale Horse, which didn't help much in understanding Dancy. But again, I really liked it.

So, last week Grimmer Tales came in the mail. And this was again something that didn't make sense most of the time, yet I felt like it was one of the best things I ever read. I don't know what it is, but it was great.

This volume has 3 very different chapters, told by Blackbird. The last chapter was a very sad one. I didn't know what to think of it, but I actually was really moved by the ending.

Thank you Ms. Kiernan, Mr. Lieber and Ms. Rosenburg for creating both Wolves and Grimmer Tales.
