So I'm an idiot, and I need to concede when I'm fooled. Even as a college-educated adult, I spent half the book legitimately annoyed by the intrusions (especially with Goldman constantly making brusque sexist comments about an affair he wishes he were having). At first, I thought, "Get on with the story!" And then, "Go back, stop-- goddamnit, can I just find the original Morgenstern?" So anyways, this isn't even Goldman's real wife and child, or a real story, or a real-- goddamnit. WHO MAKES UP LEGAL BATTLES BETWEEN THEMSELVES AND A FALSE FICTIONAL ENTITY AND SPILLS IT OUT ON TEN PAGES OF THE ***INTRODUCTION*** OF ALL THINGS, WHICH ONLY NERDS READ ANYWAYS? The commitment to the bit-- EVERY single bit, inside or outside of the Princess Bride itself-- is impeccable. You don't really need me to describe what actually happens in the book, because you know, but you should know that this adaptation makes itself worthwhile even in the existence of other, debatably evenly suited forms. That is, the movie really was the best possible adaptation of this book, this book itself is still worth a read if you watched the movie. Goldman is a genius, this book does the postmodern better than most postmodern stories do it today. We all got beaten to the goddamn punch.
