Meh.
The excerpt from "Zeroes" at the end was better than the entire book. Was the insta-love and melodrama a nod to everything that is wrong with most YA novels out there? I hope Darcy's story is not an accurate representation of the publishing world...or maybe, with this book, Westerfeld was trying to show that the industry is fucked because young people love reading garbage.
Though, the fact that Lizzie committed murder was bold. I did like that. I still find it unbelievable that "Afterworlds" would ever get published in real life, just as I find the concept of an 18-year old girl getting a $100 000 advance on a flawed NaNo novel to be unbelievable.
Just...no. If it was that easy, everyone would do it. I like to believe writing takes a little bit more skill than that.

I got this book free from Goodreads Giveaways. That's why I felt obligated to finish it.

I love this book, I just didn’t finish my re-read cause I got distracted with new titles.

I kind of wish I’d started reading Scott Westerfeld’s work with a different book of his. I’ve heard such good things about his series. This wasn’t what I’d hoped, but that doesn’t mean it’s not intriguing.

I like the book-within-a-book/narrative-within-a-narrative conceit. I also like books about books and books about storytelling. If that’s your thing, too, definitely check this out.

I went with the audiobook, which is narrated by two voice actors. One I felt was spot on pretty much the whole time. The other I felt was a little off sometimes. Maybe it was their vastly different deliveries.

At the beginning I kinda liked the book. Then after a few chapters, I realized I couldn't picture anything in my head. This was because Scott didn't describe how anything looked. He didn't describe the color of someone's hair, how tall they were, or even if that character had glasses. This completely pissed me off but I still kinda liked the story. Plus, I never NOT finish a book so I pushed myself. It took me way longer to read this book than normal. In the end, it was a pretty good book. I loved Darcy's story and I wish there was more of it. I think authors should do full biographies. Lots of readers want to know what it's like to be an author. It would be amazing to be able to read how your favorite author started, how they felt, how they handled big book events, etc. Scott kinda stepped into that with this book except he made someone else be the author instead of himself. This book was very interesting and had a wonderful concept but missed some key details that make many people love reading.

Westerfeld’s latest novel weaves together two complicated stories. Darcy moves to NYC with the advance from her soon-to-be-published first novel instead of attending college as planned. Lizzie survives an airport terrorist attack and finds herself able to interact with ghosts—the plot of Darcy’s book. Following Darcy through the complex world of YA publishing is as intriguing as Lizzie’s dealings with ghosts and falls for Yama, the Hindu death god.

I don't know how else to say it: this book was just okay.

Both storylines were interesting enough at the beginning, and the first few hundred pages flew by rather quickly. But once I got to the second half, it began to drag. A lot. Especially Lizzie's story. I ended up skimming most of Lizzie's story after the first half.

Wow!

I love the alternating chapters between the fictional author and her book/protagonist! Very interesting story! I am going to look to see if there are or going to be sequels!

Afterworlds is two books woven into one, a story about a new writer in New York interspersed with chapters of the book she's writing. But the latter perfectly complements the former: it illustrates Darcy's points and journey, the romance is a foil to her own slow-burn one, and it makes the emotional journey of the "real" story that much more rewarding. It's for fans of FANGIRL and PASSENGER and anyone who likes to read about writing.
