Dnf at p.56. BALLS, I didn't realise it's the same author as the Golden Key, which I also dnf'd. Silly me.

The first 20 or so pages of this book were interesting, intriguing and had pace, so I bought it. Now the story has gone into EXPLAINING and very little actual happening.

Not for me. Off to the bus stop book swap with this one.

A bold attempt at mixing fantasy and fantastique.

1 is frankly generous.

The writing was awful (why so many commas, why so many clauses, why were there multiple colons in a sentence?????)

The plot?? She did not know what she wanted, what tropes she wanted.
cults, religion, magic, murder mystery, anarchists, drug smuggling, Eddison and Tesla??????

There was also no detail. If she cut half the unnecessary plot points it would have been a much richer, more coherent story

Idk, this was very underwhelming. I didn’t know this was the second book in a series until the middle of it, but I don’t think that was why I didn’t like it. The characters were not really fleshed out, I didn’t feel the relationship between them at all.
I also didn’t like the writing very much and it was confusing at times. Also, the story didn’t grab me. What was the point? Everything unraveled very suddenly in the last 20 pages with no suspense up until then.

The books drags it's feet getting to the mystery itself, and once it did I found it muddy and somewhat difficult to follow. Many of the key suspects exist only as names that the characters barely or never meet or interact with, making it difficult to feel any sense of justice or completion once the strings have finally been pulled.
