I’m admittedly not a fan of short stories, so my review comes from that perspective. Overall it’s a very uneven collection but there aren’t any standouts. Most are middling, several are absolutely disappointing.

These are fun and engaging short stories, but the majority are not really mysteries in the way Christie usually writes.

Great classic short stories from Agatha Christie. Not focused on mysteries but still a good collection.

I'm really conflicted about this collection of short stories. I enjoyed some of the stories, but others seemed like they would hardly qualify as even short stories. I have to say, though, that Agatha Christie was a master at creating characters and settings. Even if the story was only 10 pages long, you were immediately at home in the story with an understanding of what was happening. I'm definitely a novel person, in the end.

Early Agatha Christie short stories that dated from the 1920s and 1930s and they reflected the era in which they were written. Not classic mysteries in the usual Christie style. These were heavy on unexpected romance, tales of the supernatural, and then a few suspense stories thrown in for good measure. Not on my short list of Christie favorites--or even on my top 50 list now that I think about it.

The two ghost stories--"The Lamp" and "The Strange Case of Sir Arthur Carmichael" I've read elsewhere. None of these stories are the mysteries normally associated with Christie. They remind me of Dahl's short stories, really--"The Landlady," "Lamb to the Slaughter," etc.--even O. Henry's "Gift of the Magi."
