Dropped it after a few chapters. Triggery content, shallow characters.

I'm not sure who the audience is for this book. At times it seems like a children's book because of the way it repeats itself. Then it's suddenly it's all about every male character seeing every female as a potential conquest! I grew tired of the misogynistic attitudes, especially given today's #MeToo and #TimesUp movements.

There seems to be a lot of negative reviews about this book. It isn't as bad as most people say it is but it's pretty unremarkable. It's an easy read even though the characters are stereotypical, the science isn't explained well and the story/plot is very predictable. There are a lot of elements in it that could have made this a great book but the execution wasn't that good.

Just no. Shitty characters. Boring plot. Nonsensically short chapters. Random date rape story. It felt like these characters should have been in a bad 50's pulp novel, not a book written in 2013. I hated everyone and was constantly hoping for misfortune to befall the whole lot of them. The fact that any of these characters got a happy ending pissed me off. Ugh.
The cover of this book touts Ben Bova as a "six-time Hugo Award winner", which I was trying to figure out how that was possible after reading this book. Turns out all his Hugo wins are for editing, so that explains a lot.

I thought it was an old (70s or 80s) novel, and read it in that light. And mostly liked it. It's problematic in terms of women, but hello science fiction nice to meet you. If the author of the book you're reading isn't a woman or Scalzi, it probably has problems with women.
