There’s enough historical material about the oil industry and Iran in the 70s to make me want to finish reading it but overall I found the pace to be too slow and the characters were not as interesting as I had hoped. This ARC was provided by William Morrow publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loooooooved this book and oh it was so so sad.

This was too much of a downer. It's a family saga. 1953, thru60's crazy, to current. Told from 3 different perspectives. The writing and handling of the timeline is good. I wasn't in the mood for this.

a surprisingly palatable book for the amount of history and commentary it's able to jam in. it was a great choice to use the perspective of a family in order to cover almost a century of events and the multigenerational divide really hit home for me. i do think the last sections in the modern era are incredibly rushed and would prefer if it was left out, but i understand what the aim was. jessica shattuck's writing is amazing to the point where i want to pick up another one of her books.

katherine and candy grieving together and becoming each other's family in the end was beautiful and one of my favourite parts.
