a surprisingly palatable book for the amount of history and commentary it's able to jam in. it was a great choice to use the perspective of a family in order to cover almost a century of events and the multigenerational divide really hit home for me. i do think the last sections in the modern era are incredibly rushed and would prefer if it was left out, but i understand what the aim was. jessica shattuck's writing is amazing to the point where i want to pick up another one of her books.

katherine and candy grieving together and becoming each other's family in the end was beautiful and one of my favourite parts.
