I never knew that Rick Riordan wrote adult novels until I was digging into all his books. And when I saw a review complaining about it having “too many swear words” I knew I had to read it.

I am a fan of Riordan's mythology-based works, namely PJO, HOO, KC, and MC. But as I grow up as a reader, my love for adult novels prevailed over my love for YA's. Riordan is one of my favorite authors, and I was excited to read his first (adult) novel. Did it disappoint?

It did.

Characters ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The best aspect of the book, and probably the one that saved it from being completely boring.

Writing ⭐⭐.5
Not that bad, it's just not engaging. I also didn't like its wordiness.

Flow ⭐⭐.5
Maybe it's just me, but this book felt sluggish and dragging.

Ending ⭐⭐⭐
Eh. It's okay.

Overall ⭐⭐⭐
Yawn.

...but I'm willing to give the next book a go. The series might be actually great as a whole, it just has a not-so-good first book.

Livro muito bom, um pouco lento comparado aos de Percy Jackson.

Maybe Percy Jackson makes for better reading because of its fast pace, and I did find this first effort of Rick Riordan quite dragging. Nevertheless, I'm going to finish this series.

Good book. Nothing phenomenal though. It has a lot of the wit and humor you'd expect from Riordan.

This is a fun and entertaining book. The main character is a young-ish guy, but this is definitely not YA read. He is an amateur private detective with lots of tenacity and a great sense of humor.

One warning however, in case you get curious like I did. The title of the book references the protagonist’s favorite cocktail which is simply Big Red cream soda mixed with Tequila. I tried it, it’s disgusting.

Rick Riordan didn't make a bad book. May a little unimaginative and heavy on the author insert character, but not bad. Still, I'm happy he moved on to more creative stories with Percy Jackson and alike.
He's faith on the fighting might of Tai Chi it's adorably naive, given this is not suppose to be a fantasy book.
