It took my three tries to get into it but I finally hit it at the right mood.

I don't know quite what to think of this series yet. Book 2 was soooo very different from the first book (_The Gunslinger_) that, save for the presence of the main character, Roland, it could have been part of a different series altogether. The first book has a total spaghetti-western feel (kind of like Garth Ennis' "Preacher" series of graphic novels), showcasing all sorts of wacky and grotesque characters from a world that has "moved on". The second book hops in and out of the lives and consciousnesses of three new characters -- Eddie, Detta/Odetta, and Jack -- and doesn't have much to do with Roland or his intriguing backstory (or really, anything from the first book) at all. This book felt out-of-place. I'm curious to see where the next one takes me.

Hard to read at times but still a masterpiece. I'm loving this series so far.
