Liked the introduction to the main character Aline and found it cool/interesting with the concept with her powers
helping souls pass on
. It just was taking to long to get to the point of events and scenes even though it was showing past of Aline but just was not getting to present day fast enough. I just did not like where it was going and the book lulled out.

This book was not what I expected but was entertaining. I liked the premise of the story, but I felt like it never fulfilled the promise that was there. I wanted something that was more emotional. Overall,What Became of Magic is a cozy and entertaining magical story.

A special thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press & Wednesday Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

DNF at about 40%.

This one didn’t work for me at all. I think the author was going for a fairytale/storybook/whimsical tone in a modern setting, but it was tonally inconsistent, so it just came across as disconnected. I also felt like, for me, it didn’t connect emotionally either. Things just kind of happened one right after the other, but I often did not know why things were happening - cause and effect was not always clear to me. The worldbuilding was pretty flimsy as well – things that didn’t make sense were just kind of hand-waved away. I think I was supposed to accept the hand-waving as being part of the whimsy, but since the whimsical tone didn’t work for me, neither did the hand-waving. I got the book from NetGalley, so I was going to try and power through so that I could submit a review, but in the end I couldn’t do it. I was just constantly bored and annoyed. My first NetGalley DNF :(

As much as I wanted to like this one, I just couldn't get past all the characters and the far too unnecessarily complicated storyline.  It had a good idea behind it, but it was just too hard for me to decipher the actual story beyond all the confusion. 2 stars. Thank you, for the eARC.

I found this book to be so unnecessarily confusing and if I hadn’t bought a physical copy I wouldn’t have finished it. Too many ideas, too many characters with too many names and relationships to each other and despite having all these big ideas just was also somehow really boring???? Genuinely bummed because the back cover made it sound so fun and interesting but alas

Book was wildly confusing, went fast in the worst way. Throwing together multiple diffrent mythos doing things that made no sense

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC of this book!

This story is not one that I could explain to someone else. It had magic, it had a sort of found family, and it had soulmates. Other than that, I was lost through a good portion of this story.

I wish there was more world building, so we could understand the rules and what's happening. Instead, it was more of an anything goes plot. You have to sit there and accept what's happening or you'll dislike it.

I'm sure there are people out there who enjoy riddles and zany magical plots, and those people will adore this story. I just need more details laid out, so I can grasp what's happening better.
