DNF at about 40%.
This one didn’t work for me at all. I think the author was going for a fairytale/storybook/whimsical tone in a modern setting, but it was tonally inconsistent, so it just came across as disconnected. I also felt like, for me, it didn’t connect emotionally either. Things just kind of happened one right after the other, but I often did not know why things were happening - cause and effect was not always clear to me. The worldbuilding was pretty flimsy as well – things that didn’t make sense were just kind of hand-waved away. I think I was supposed to accept the hand-waving as being part of the whimsy, but since the whimsical tone didn’t work for me, neither did the hand-waving. I got the book from NetGalley, so I was going to try and power through so that I could submit a review, but in the end I couldn’t do it. I was just constantly bored and annoyed. My first NetGalley DNF :(
