An unbelievably great book. Sears writes like a novelist in parts, in that he's so gripping. Despite the fact that we know how this battle (and war) turns out, we sit on the edge our seats. Highly, highly recommended.

I read this after visiting Gettysburg National Military Park on 2 separate occasions. I actually bought my copy at the gift shop/bookstore on my 2nd visit. Mr. Sears wrote an incredibly researched and thorough account of this massive Civil War battle. So as I read it, I can envision where both sides are on the field. But I learned more about the individuals and how they were seen as soldiers. Although General Meade does not get quite the credit post battle from Lincoln, it sounds like he was a decent tactician. On the other hand, Daniel Sickles of III corp almost lost the second day for the Union. I would have given 5 stars, but there was almost too much explanation in minute details and I found this to be too involved for my liking. All in all this was an extremely well researched account of one of the bloodiest battles in our nation's history.

This is how a historical work should be composed. It provides verified and cited facts on the matter, compiled in a manor in which they are articulated in storybook fashion. It was an engaging read, but not lacking in detail. It is definitely one of the best Civil War books I’ve had the pleasure of reading.

For those who've seen the movie Gettysburg... there is a lot more to it than what was shown in the film! Sears account of the battle begins with an overview of the armies and a look at the Western Theatre of the war that influenced General Lee's decision to move beyond the Potomac. Sears presents history in an incredibly readable format, you don't feel bogged down by the details but the details are most certainly there. Sears corrects a few erroneous commonly held beliefs about the battle, assigns blame where it is due and looks at why certain decisions were made and not made. As with his account of the battle of Antietam, this is a fantastic must-read for anyone interested in the American Civil War.

Amazing. I've been wanting to read this book for a very long time. I'm obsessed with the Civil War, Gettysburg is of particular interest to me and Stephen Sears is a preeminent historian. So I pounced at the opportunity when I saw my local library had a copy as an audio book.

This book did not disappoint. Amazing detailed, it didn't bog down in boring details. It stuck to the story of the Battle of Gettysburg and I appreciated that. Very happy I finally was able read it.
