Gettysburg by Stephen W. Sears

5.0

For those who've seen the movie Gettysburg... there is a lot more to it than what was shown in the film! Sears account of the battle begins with an overview of the armies and a look at the Western Theatre of the war that influenced General Lee's decision to move beyond the Potomac. Sears presents history in an incredibly readable format, you don't feel bogged down by the details but the details are most certainly there. Sears corrects a few erroneous commonly held beliefs about the battle, assigns blame where it is due and looks at why certain decisions were made and not made. As with his account of the battle of Antietam, this is a fantastic must-read for anyone interested in the American Civil War.
