I’ve been binge reading this series. I am not a typical horror fan, but these are that, plus historical mysteries.

This was my least favourite in the Matthew Corbett series. It was considerably shorter than it’s predecessors & the story felt weak. The character Magnus felt like a replacement for Hudson Greathouse. I still enjoy the characters & the overall story arc of what McGammon is doing, but this just felt like a story that was just rushed out due to en encroaching deadline.

Will still continue with the series, in face “Freedom of the Mask” is in my cue to read soon.

The adventures of Matthew Corbett continue with a mission with a smaller scope that suffers just a little bit from the comparison to the large scope fireworks that was the previous entry The Providence Rider, yet remains a very entertaining story full of everything that has made this series so enjoyable and delectable so far, only in smaller dosage.   Set mostly over a few days around Charles Town in the summer of 1703, The River of Souls feels almost like a stand alone mystery with a new secondary cast (however as colourful as usual in this series, Magnus especially is fun), but it certainly relies heavily on the legacy and developments from previous entries and through the reappearances of a few figures from the past it manages to set the stage for the next step of what has become the "main story arc" of the series.  All in all, a slightly inferior entry after four stellar volumes, but mostly because it feels a lot like a transitional story which maybe could have been a long novella rather than the new full episode of Matthew's journey.  However, a series can't all be Providence Riders, which took the better part of two books to set up, and The River of Souls similarly seems to put in place then first pieces of the new game.

My Least Favorite Corbett

This was definitely my least favorite entry in the Matthew Corbett series that I have read thus far. The fact that I still think it's worth of 3 stars should let you know how highly I view this series overall.

The writing here is as good as ever, and it's something that will always when point from me with McCammon even when the story is mediocre which is definitely the case here. The plot doesn't really have a central mystery, or at least one that is compelling or bot blatantly obvious right away. Instead it's kind of a straight forward chase. Also, there are some strange plot decisions here that reminded me of something you might see on a somewhat dumb network TV drama including a "to be continued" type of ending. Absolutely nothing to deter me from the rest of the series at all, but nothing of the highs from the first 4 books.

Für mich bisher der schwächste Band der Reihe. Er kam mir vor wie ein Überbrückungsbuch zwischen zwei anderen Büchern.
Trotz feiner Momente, hinterlies das einen faden Beigeschmack.

Matthew returns to Charles Town. Of course, he wouldn't be himself if he hadn't gotten into trouble. He joins a search for three escaped slaves. One of them might have committed a brutal murder. Only, Matthew suspects someone tries to frame the poor guy.

What follows is a frenetically paced journey through the jungle. Prepare for macabre scenes and a strong cliffhanger ending.
