Read this on recommendation of Betsy Bird in a list of scary books for middle graders. The Hotel California comparison is apt. I did not love this but I am not a fan of scary stories. It is creepy and atmospheric and it is definitely one I will recommend to the right reader.

eah... ‘Creepy’ is a good way to put this book!

So Inn Between is about two best friends who are on a trip in the desert. They stop for the night at a hotel, and, in the morning, Kara’s family is missing. Things go in a downward spiral for the two friends after that.

I was not expecting it to be so creepy! I think that the dose of creepiness is perfect for middle grade, though. It somewhat reminded me of Coraline, although Coraline was creepy on another level!

The characters weren’t my favorite, but that’s okay, the book wasn’t about the characters themselves.

Quinn is suffering from the loss of her sister, making her seem paranoid at times. Kara is sweeter and more down-to earth.

I don’t want to spoil much, but I can say that the things that happen are really weird, but a good weird!

This book is very short - its easy to fly right through, and can be fun to read along with a sibling!

The end was a definite shock! I got pretty sad actually... I won’t say what it is though!!

I’m giving this a solid 3/5 :)

So...this is absolutely NOT a creepy middle grade story. This is about friendship, yes. But mostly about loss, grief, and barely-dealt-with trauma. There's no mystery to solve bc it's fairly obvious what's going on from the start. I'm honestly not sure how I felt about this because it was so far off from what I expected and what the synopsis promised.

Ok, so I read this book in like 6th grade and I recently remembered it. The plot and story of this book pops into my mind at random times and it makes me very nostalgic. There is so much symbolism and vivid images in this book. It was one of the first books that made me feel something more than myself. I absolutely love it.

Disclaimer: this is strictly from memories. I want to reread to see if it's all that I remember.

this was reeaalllyy good. i found it a tad bit dark for a children's book since it had the aspect of being condemned to hell and suffering for all eternity, but i guess that was the horror part of it.

I read this for a book club with my students. It was really interesting. I kept asking questions and wondering what was going on. I did not expect the ending.

Not at all what I was expecting, but oh so good! Definite creepy vibes throughout with an emotional punch at the end. Really good stuff.

There is a particular sub-genre of books--I don't think it's named--where characters are somewhere, and the point of the book is to figure out where they are, or why they're there, etc. Maze Runner is a recent famous example, or House of Stairs, or Riverworld. This falls into that subgenre for most of its length.

Unfortunately, I knew where they were, and why, instantly, so that was discouraging. Of course a kid may not figure it out as quickly (I'm a fairly bright adult), so this is my take on reading it for me, not for giving it to a 10 year old, say. For a while I thought maybe the author intended it to be easy to figure out the twist, and there was going to be some interesting plot twists ahead, but no. The climax was the characters figuring out what I'd guessed 80% of the book ago.

The characters weren't particularly compelling, the mystery was spoiled, the plot was meandering, and ultimately, I was left cold.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s).

Creepy and sad. I wasn't expecting that. Slow start and some uneven pacing, but a good read. Cover needs to reflect the tone of the story more.
