I really liked this! The New Orleans setting was especially well-written and evocative and made me want to go back immediately. Both romances worked for me really well and despite the relatively short time frame of the book, they didn’t seem rushed to me.

I will say the discussion questions at the end talked about how the four mains were all white despite the demographics of New Orleans, and that’s definitely something that could have been changed - I may have missed some early descriptions but honestly I spent most of the book picturing Truman as black until the line near the end describing him as having light brown hair. Still, I liked the rest of the diversity and how this book dealt with romantic and familial relationships.

I gave this a few chapters, but I didn't vibe well with the characters ... probably a soft DNF, as I'm enjoying an alternate option from this author that I found on KU.

Pretty unhinged book ! U can include diverse characters and describe them using words other than just saying their race :-)

Also the
fight between Greta and Carys was super bad and I don't think carys was right in how they treated Greta

Who was trapped in this book ?? The reader ?

No lie, I was drawn to this book solely because of the fact that half of it takes place in Nola, which is about an hour from me. Okay, first of all--I'm curious if she's ever spent real time in Nola, or if she's just read some of the cookie cutter stereotyping. I absolutely LOVE New Orleans and the culture, but it's not quite (or at all) the cookie cutter small town where everyone knows one another. I absolutely love Nola and spend a lot of time there, butttttt please don't do what our MC did when she first arrived.

Final Thoughts:

This story made my heart so happy. The diverse cast of characters in New Orleans helped to juxtapose the small town in Maine. I appreciated that the characters in New Orleans had a variety of gender identities. So many different pronouns. I complete acceptance of it. None of it was “big deal.” Carys friends were introduced the same way. Without a pause for genders. The pronouns were used in the course of the story. Ex. “And this is Helen. They don’t usually throw things at guests.” Chapter 8 Each character was described with their race. I like seeing this. It’s a reminder that not every character is “default” white. While we primarily talk about the sexy parts of these books, I have to shout out the personal mental and emotional journeys that Greta and Truman go through. Self discovery of any kind isn’t easy. I think this was a great example of how to grow yourself in order to be capable of being a good partner.

Okay so you’ve seen the cinematic masterpiece “The Holiday” starring Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz? This is that, but gay. It was fun and fluffy and really sweet but not unique, but points for gay AND lesbian rep with the swapped parties. I did not love the lesbian love interest and parts of that felt kinda toxic at times but the overall community and found family aspects were wonderful and finding your home in unexpected people & places will always tug at my heart strings.

A new holiday favourite. I would love to see this adapted into a movie. Can totally see myself rereading this around Christmas next year

Longish for such a thing, but satisfying. Part of the romance genre that includes relationship coaching, but also has a couple on page steamy sex scenes. Mature Queer relationships! Good times.
