I just finished reading another young adult book that deals with the same subject matter, and that one was better, so I think I'm biased.

This is the story of a gum-cracking girl who sits in the back of the room and doesn't do her work, but we learn how horrible her home life is via her English journal. It was good (but a little dated), and I think some of my lower-level students would like this.

Written in journal entries. About a 15-yr-old girl trying to keep her family together. Short, fast read, totally worth it.

I found this to be an interesting read.
All I can say is that teachers deal with so much; they deserve serious respect and thanks. All students come with a background or burden of some kind. I think this is a great example of how class content has the potential to change lives, though it may not feel like that at times.
I did enjoy seeing the views of both student and teacher.
While it was a good book, if you're looking for something funny or light hearted, this is not the book for you. It's not terribly heavy, but the content is a little sobering, I felt.

I liked the character's voice. I could envision myself responding the same way to the situation that occurs within the book. I liked the ending and that it did not downplay the issues it portrayed.

This was a childhood favorite of mine. It is definitely well written and handles some intense topics with care. I think it still holds up well.

Oh my gosh, definitely a favorite. Wish I had it at home. This book was so good! You never want to put it down and all you want to do is help and hug and slap a few people to their senses.
