Dangerous by Shannon Hale

A very weak plot with a pointless love triangle and barely fleshed out minor characters. The main character is born without a right hand and makes herself impressively scientific prosthetics in order to 'fix herself'. The way the disability was treated was gross, implying that she was broken, perpetuating terrible stereotypes. The good things include: a diverse cast (the main character is biracial), an attempt at writing science fiction. I am disappointed because I passionately love the Bayern books. Here's hoping the next book by Hale is better.

Definitely dangerous sci-fi. Saving the world and in relationships.

I did not like this book. The other reviews pretty much say it all. I couldn't even finish it, not just because it was probably for people a bit younger than me. I didn't know what was going on.

Shannon Hale books tend to be hit or miss with me and this one was a definite miss. I spent too much time thinking, If I was writing this book... I didn't like most of the characters, especially Maisie, which is usually a bad sign. She made a lot of poor choices and at the end of the book was still making poor choices. The only reason it gets 2 stars is because I wanted to know what happened in the end, even if I was disappointed.

I really enjoyed this book, and Maisie was a great character. It was a great concept and story. But the rest of the characters were fairly two-dimensional, and the discovery of what all was going on took way too long. The few moments of explaining Maisie's moral decisions were a bit heavy-handed, even though I agreed with them.

So this was little more sci-fi than I prefer and the other thing I didn't like was that it seemed like she was trying to do the YA lit (she pushed the envelope a little bit further than I would be comfortable with when calling it middle grade, but not as far as some YA lit that I've read), but her 'voice' seemed more middle grade. The reason I say this is that it isn't a clean book, in that I would let my 11 year old read it...I would even think twice about letting my 13 year old boy read as well because of the romantic/relationship aspect of the book, but it seemed more juvenile than even her Princess Academy books when it came to the voices of the characters. Interesting story line if it's your thing, but I would pre-read it before you let your tween read it for sure.

This book did not grab me at first, but turned out to be surprisingly good. Complex plot. Interesting characters. Not real teenage angsty, but young. Fun.
