I have to say I would definitely lean towards Tolkien’s beliefs on allegories vs Cs Lewis.

Now let me start off with saying I didnt dislike this book. I didn’t love it. It was meh. I’m glad I read it since it is such a talked about classic among my peers.

The reason I didn’t like it was because I doubt it repetitive and simplistic. Which was relatively common at the time it was written. It’s certainly no eragon style adventure with “danger” at every turn. It was very clear where the allegorical references were coming from. It was almost off putting how much each reference takes you out of the story. That in turn made it hard to connect with the characters and become invested in the plot.

In conclusion I would not read pilgrims progress again but would recommend that everyone read it from an educational stand point.

Glad to have had a reason to read this. Feel like it is a basic that I should have read a long time ago.

Beautiful

This is a perfect book for a new believer. I think I will buy a few copies and hand them out as gifts at baptisms.

Loved this book! It was a beautiful allegory and a wonderful story, with a wonderful and beautiful message behind it. It was very insightful and thought provoking and spiritually moving. I personally love figurative language and allegorical type writing, so this was right up my alley. I absolutely loved reading it, meditating on it, and learning from it. I would honestly recommend it to any Christian, especially if you’re feeling emotionally and/or spiritually drained. It’s an amazing beautiful book about an amazing wonderful God and His amazing wonderful gift to us!

I wanted to read this book for a long time and decided that the only way I'd do it was with a book club. So I started a book club and this was the first book we read! Good story and the allegory was easy for this non-English major to follow. The "Today's English" version was a must for me. Other, more ambitions club members read the original and like it.

The first part was four stars. The second part, which I don't think is in the original book, has issues. pgs 159-256, I think is part two, the wife's story, but it doesn't have the same feel as the original. The mistakes include trinity instead of Godhead and mentions Easter as if the Pilgrim's would have considered it a holy day.
The second part also included scripture, but it wasn't as well lined up and wasn't the King James version as the first part was.
I'd recommend the story, but would recommend an old English version or as old as you could get. Or, I'd recommend only reading part one of this version.
