While this is meant to reflect aspects of the authors experience, I wish the brother's story had a more positive resolution, given that this is targeted at young readers.

For a middle grade book this was really sad. I don't know why I read it but it was good. (the ending made me mad but thats it)

This is an interesting story, but not a stand-out graphic novel to me. The artwork definitely fits into the Scholastic graphix style so it just didn't stand out and so the storyline is the only thing that moved this story forward. Definitely an interesting story based on real life--I think kids will be a little confused about when it happens--while it says it happens in the '80s, I don't think it is recognizable throughout as the 80's.

A great graphic novel for children and adults to understand the hardships and struggles that Asian children endure when left with family friends and others in a foreign country. This fictional story of a family of three parachute kids is told in a way to make one feel the stress of the journey and struggle they face. The one issue with this story is how the brother is made to feel guilty about his sexuality and there is no resolution beyond him being quite for possibly the rest of his life.

What an eye opening, harrowing ordeal for a group of kids to go through. I didn’t know about this phenomenon but I can see why and how it happens.
The art, the writing, the circumstances were all really well portrayed and I think tweens and young teens in particular will really like this book.
Perfect for grades 5 and up.
