Words cannot describe how this book made me feel as a white person, but as I read through each of the pages, I felt a sense of shame that Adeyemi was trying to capture. In light of recent events this is a book everyone should be reading. Pain, sorrow, laughter, and a serious message of racist speech pierces the pages and comes alive by the brilliant Tomi Adeyemi's writing. She is highlighting the truth about the dominant culture in a way which reflects the experiences of modern day Black people, with Nigerian culture and a sense of pride also running through. As a white person who tries to be an ally, I can never feel the emotions encapsulated by the charachters in this book, but the message spurs me on the stand in solidarity with others.

Amazing, beautifully written, full range of emotional highs and lows. The well developed characters, warmed and broke my heart. The story had so much modern truth while delving into fantasy. It is hard not to see and feel the connection to the world around us. I encourage you to read the author's note at the end her words are important.
I loved this, I laughed and cried and will think about this story for a long time to come

Fantastic book. It's a whole new world of mystery, magic, and war. The characters backgrounds build as you read the story. There are parts where you cannot put the book down. I cannot wait to read book 2!
