I wasn't as impressed with this upon reread. It felt epic in scope, but also didn't I didn't connect with it as much this time. It definitely had a big setup for the future though.

I'm not good at writing reviews, so I'll try to keep this short.

The world in this book has the potential to jumpstart wonderful stories, to have emotional impact and welcome grand adventures. Although the characters' plight was relatable, heartwrenching and exciting, I could not suspend my disbelief as I usually do probably because of the lack of world building. It was pretty dry in that regard, despite how often it tried to depend on said worldbuilding to give the characters motivation. Despite that, it's a fun read until towards 70% mark when Inan enters the picture. Long story short, his character is bland, lacks any real depth, isn't interesting, and shoving him in my face with unearned scenes of romance with our main character did not help me to warm up to him. The romance unfortunately dragged this story down for me. Which made the last 30% of this book a drag to read, a bit of a jumbled mess, I'm afraid.

I will read the second book, which I guess shows that it's still worth a read and has the potential to get better from now on, but as for this book by itself, it's a solid 3 stars at best.

TL;DR Romance sucked, world building was lacking, last half of the book felt rushed.
