What Alice Forgot

3.5⭐️ overall liked the book but could’ve been cut by 100 pages or so/ feel like Elisabeth and Frannie’s perspective could be removed. The ending also gave me whiplash and was rushed.

An enjoyable, surprisingly fast-paced read focusing on the bonds of family, friendship, and marriage. As it asks the question "Am I where I thought I would be 10 years ago," it walks through the story from 3 different perspectives: the third-person narrator that mostly explores Alice's (main character's) thoughts; the journal/psychology project entries of Alice's older sister, Elizabeth; and the letters of Alice's surrogate grandmother to her long-dead fiance, Phil. While it may sound a little odd, these varying perspectives actually fill in certain plot holes interestly, and by the end work as another piece in the puzzle of the way memory works in the human mind.

I enjoyed listening to the audiobook version which has a pleasant narrator who gave characters their individual voices. Although I enjoyed the mystery of the first half of the book, it seemed to move too slowly in the second half with scenes that didn't provide enough interest. Alice was interesting to learn about both pre and post injury, but by the end of the story I was not as invested in her which was disappointing.

A tad bit confusing at times with points of view, but overall a cozy feel-good story.

"Early love is exciting and exhilarating. It's light and bubbly. Anyone can love like that. But love after three children, after a separation and a near-divorce, after you've hurt each other, after you've seen the worst and the best. Well, that sort of love is ineffable. It deserves its own word."
