A charming BL manga! I loved the sweet drawings and the character designs. The goat especially was adorable. The romance was also sweet and wholesome. I love the idea of a goat eating the paper of the book and can know the emotions and story of it. This is a fun read if you want an adorable yaoi manga that is like human zootopia with none of the animal racism tension.

Super cute BL! Has nsfw censored scenes near the end and I enjoyed that very much

First want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this in exchange for an honest review! This was such a cute and adorable read with a little spice. I love the fact that Yagi chomps on books and
Spoiler can freaking taste FLAVORS.
The romance is super cute and fluffy so if you are into that I say go for it. There were some interactions that I found funny as well.

All in all I loved it and only took a point off because it is only one book. I'd love to have read a series!

Yagi the Bookshop Goat, by Fumi Furukawa
★★★★☆
194 Pages

Yagi the Bookshop Goat is a surprising, unusual story that was delightful. In a quirky world of anthropomorphic animals, where carnivores and herbivores have their own regions, Yagi is an anomaly. A goat who is nature-driven to eat paper, but who is madly in love with books and dreams of being a bookseller. Inspired by someone in his past, Yagi finally gets hired in a bookstore in the carnivore region, who understand his talent of being able to scent the mood/themes of a book.

With this unique premise, the story seems like it should be funny, weird and quirky. And it is. All the way through, there were cute, funny moments that showed you the bond between Yagi and the boss who makes him nervous, but whose written notes leave a delicious scent behind. I utterly LOVED their dynamic with each other, and how it helped Yagi overcome his fear of being in a carnivore region, and his urge to eat the merchandise.

Yagi was adorable from page one. Ookami was a fitting, scary boss with a soft spot for Yagi. The themes of opposites attract, age gap, and the reunion with a mentor, really helped push the story forward as well as adding other dynamics to their relationship. There was a definitely grumpyXsunshine aspect, which I love, with Yagi being the oblivious but adorable idiot, at times. There were lots of accidents that led to funny consequences.

In the end, I loved the story and the characters. I probably would have rated it higher if it hadn't been for the 18+ content, which I felt wasn't necessary to the story. It didn't add anything important, and the part that was plot-related didn't need to be shown on page in detail to know what was going on. A fade-to-black would have been perfect, giving the story a stronger YA feel, since the story is so cute and quirky that it would be perfect for the YA market.

I got an ARC of this book.

I will have to admit that I got this book solely because adorable goat boy wanted to read books, but kept eating them is probably the most adorable and most me sort of story there could be. I was expecting a slice of life about being a nerd. Then it got weird.

I was not expected the Chew-esque magic. Yagi can taste what he reads in a special way. He can taste the story and sometimes the feelings/intentions of someone who has written the note. It was interesting, but it felt badly controlled. At first it was just mystery tastes a certain way, but then he could taste that someone was in love? It was a weird thing that didn’t feel developed enough to make it make sense within the world.

The gay sex came out of nowhere. I did ship them, but the whole “you will sleep better if you orgasm” come on was really strange. If that sex scene was more cuddling based and just a “oh, look how cute he is, he fell asleep on me”. It would have had the same impact on the story and the story would have flowed a bit more smoothly when it came to the romance. The second sex scene was pretty wonderful. It fit the story, it fit the couple. I liked it. That first one though was just a bit strange.

Overall, it was a cute manga. It was not the yaoi I grew up with. More the BL that is making the rounds now. I have to say both have their merits and this fits so much better with the more romance based M/M stories.

This was adorable and fluffy and surprisingly different from other predators/prey relationships I’ve read in the past. There was no prejudice for them being together because it wasn’t ‘forbidden’ and Ookami genuinely cared about Yagi more than anything else. So glad I picked this up for a quick read.

Okay, so superficial yaoi still exists! But I find it incredible that even in this explicit, anthropomorphized predator/prey universe (think Zootopia rules) yaoi manga, the seme directly brings up consent holy shit. Anyway this was frequently cute but just not as much my thing.
