First of all, everyone who said to read to S. A. Cosby books via audiobook did not lie! The narrator was top notch.

I've never read a heist thriller and I so enjoyed this one. Bug was such an interesting, dynamic, well-written character and the heartbreaking dilemmas he faced that led to the decisions he made felt so real and alive. In a world where he's tried hard to get away from the man he used to be, his old world and new world collide in the worst way, and Blacktop Wasteland is a lesson in what happens when you operate in fear.

How far would you go to secure your family’s future? What kind of risks would you take? These are the kinds of questions that Beauregard “Bug” faces in Blacktop Wasteland. Just like all of the other novels I’ve read by Cosby, the tough questions are asked and answered, and along the way we get so deeply rooted in the characters that you’re on the edge of your seat just waiting to see what happens to them, hoping for the best (well, I was at least). This was my third novel by Cosby, so I feel like I can safely say that he can do no wrong. This was a fast paced, heart pounding, white knuckled crime thriller that I’ll be thinking about for awhile.

So I don't care about cars. At all. And I'm also not too fond of action movies. So that's why I resisted reading this book for so long, even though I kept hearing good things about it. I should have read it sooner.

I think it is worth noting that this book is very violent. That said, I didn't find the violence gratuitous, though it was definitely shocking at times. But this is a story of extremely morally compromised characters, for the most part. It poses a lot of important and relevant questions about the forces that direct people into a life of crime, and that then keep pulling them under even when they try to escape. There are a lot of other issues baked into this as well, such as racism and poverty. All of it feels very natural, and you feel every bit of it because this is a book that grabs you and pulls you right into its narrative.

The characterization in this novel is magnificent as well, so good that it forces you to sit in the discomfort created by the dissonance between the things Bug does and your understanding of why he does them.

I will definitely read more by this author.
