Absolutely phenomenal. Harris's writing was so beautiful and she really brought this folk tale to life. The illustrations by Hawkins were also stunning. This will be one of my best books of 2019 without a doubt.

Beautifully illustrated tale of the Selkies of Celtic lore.

Beautiful book. Reading it a second time, it struck me how tragic the tale is, how each character is driven by their circumstances and I can't really dislike any of them. Beautiful art as well! It had the feel of a fairytale about it.

moby dick but if moby dick were cool and had pictures

Selkie lore is perfect. Its so melancholy and beautiful.
Harris did a wonderful job telling this story. And now all I want to do is walk into the sea with the seal who lives down the road.
To hell with being land folk.

3.5 stars.

this was nice! a really sweet, simple fairytale. it didn't do any original stuff or form much of a unique perspective, but not every story has to do that. and it was super short, which i appreciated.

* I read this as the Ancient Runes read for the OWLs readathon*

I have to admit that retellings and stories based on folk tales are not my usual pick, but this one was sent to me and it had such beautiful illustrations that I couldn't resist it. The story is a simple one of a love and betrayal, selkies and people of the sea, the Folk and their cunning and more. It's the story that you've probably already imagined, nothing new, but it's beautifully told and has dreamy illustrations to accompany it. I definitely recommend giving it a try. 3.5*s
