The characters were frustrating precisely because they were realistic. I felt emotionally abused by them the whole time, but it led to many reflections. The prose was simple and beautiful. I like the present tense. What I didn’t like was the role of Tasha (what was the point?). Given her presence in the book, I wish we got to understand her more. Not that this book tends to spoon feed you why each character is the way they are (it’s complicated and subtle, like in reality), but it felt like Tasha was just a side character inserted to make a point rather than a real person. Overall, a thought-provoking and beautiful read that made me learn a lot about Sri Lankan history and politics as well.

The writing was rather simple for a story that could have packed so much emotion. I hope to see more books about this topic because queer people of color deserve more representation in media.

I actually enjoyed this quite a bit. Before I came out as a queer woman, I was married to a Sri Lankan Tamil. I experienced quite a bit of their culture, had to wear sarees and got a glimpse of the complicated familial relationships that exist. I can only imagine how hard it must be to come out as queer for a South Asian woman. Lakshmi felt very real to me.
In the end, I really hoped that Lakshmi can get her happily ever after with Tasha, living on her own, with the kitten.

There’s a lot that’s really true here. And it was the closest representation to something like my parents that I’ve honestly ever seen.  I feel for Lakshmi, I do, and I feel not dissimilar to her situation which is maybe why this hit a bit too close to home.
